Many years ago I fell in love with the simplicity and honesty of the music of the Carter Family. Since then, I’ve annoyed my family by playing their music too often, incessantly talking about recording some of their tunes, and obsessing over the recording once it started.
Though most of these songs were not actually written by the Carter Family, I first learned them from their recordings. From the outset, I never considered attempting to mimic their sound. Rather than making a recording focused on preservation, I have chosen to carry on the Carter Family tradition of making the songs my own, including a number of musical and a few lyrical changes. In fact, the most traditional arrangement is the title track, Happy With You, my original tribute to the genre they popularized.
My intent was to interpret, recreate, and simply enjoy this great music, complete with its quirky phrasing and folk-theology. I trust our love and respect for each song and for each other as musical friends will permeate this recording. —Nathan
